Dubai vs Singapore: Which One Should You Actually Pick?

I've lived in both. Three years in Dubai, now two in Singapore. People ask me constantly which is better so here's the honest comparison. Spoiler: it depends entirely on what you care about.
Money
Dubai wins on take-home pay. Zero income tax. That's it. That's the argument. In Singapore you'll pay 15-22% depending on your bracket. On a SGD 15,000 monthly salary, that's a noticeable difference. But Singapore wins on long-term financial infrastructure. CPF contributions, stable currency, robust banking system. Dubai's financial ecosystem is fine but it's younger and less regulated in some areas.
Lifestyle
Dubai is flashy. Brunches, beaches, supercars, that whole energy. It's fun for a while. If you're in your late twenties with no kids and you like going out, Dubai is brilliant. Singapore is more understated. The food is incredible — genuinely world-class hawker centres for nothing. The green spaces are beautiful. But the nightlife is expensive and there's a certain conservatism that takes adjustment if you're coming from London.
Career
Singapore is better for long-term career building in finance. Full stop. It's a genuine global financial centre with depth. Hong Kong is the other obvious choice in APAC, but Singapore has been gaining ground, especially post-2020. Dubai has a lot of financial services roles but many are regional or Middle East focused. If you want global exposure, Singapore gives you more options.
The expat experience
Dubai is very transient. People come for two years, save money, leave. Your social circle rotates constantly. It can feel lonely if you're there long-term. Singapore's expat community is more settled. People stay. They put down roots. Their kids go to local schools. It feels more like a home and less like a posting.
My recommendation
If you're young, single, and want to save aggressively: Dubai. If you're building a career, have a family, or want stability: Singapore. Both are safe, clean, well-connected cities with great infrastructure. You won't go wrong with either. You'll just have a very different experience.
